Jose Lozano
Jose’s aunt and uncle wanted him to gain a higher education, but they had no idea how to help him get there. It was with the help of his high school counselor and the TRiO Talent Search program for getting him on the right path towards college.
Jose eventually chose to attend UAFS after learning how affordable tuition costs were over other schools.
“One adjustment as a first generation student was choosing to live on campus in the Lion’s Den. I’d say the best thing I did to adjust was get out and meet new people on campus. I got involved with different clubs and made it feel more at home,” Jose said.
As he entered his freshman year, Jose said that the Student Support Services staff were extremely helpful by providing him with Scantrons and a calculator for his classes. He was baffled by how generous and helpful the staff at UAFS were.
When asked to give any advice to other first generation students, Jose says, “Take advantage of the services you have offered to you on campus.”
